The Sclupture in the cave

Posted by Michael Amin (Toronto, Canada) on 28 July 2007 in Architecture and Portfolio.

This is the statue of Shapoor the first, king of Persia, 1800 years ago, from the Sassanid dynasty. It is located inside a very hard reach cave almost in the heart of old Persia. The statue, made of one huge stalactite, has a height of 7 meters and weighs 30 tons. The statue was pulled down and broken after the Arab invasion of Iran in the 7th century AD. Later in the 70s it was re-erected and restored.
The cave itself is 442 meters in length in the widest point. It took me about 2 hours to climb the mountain and reach the cave.
